Back to Life

Posted on June 20th, 2006 in Ramblings | 5 Comments »

After a couple weekends on the road we are back home for the remainder of the summer. We’ve got a house to finish building and an apartment to pack up and move. Sitting here watching the Mavs demise (here’s hoping I eat those words before this entry is finished).

We went out to Midland a couple weekends ago. I had the privilege to lend my lead-guitar skills to my dear friend, Dan Radmacher, and his band. It was a good time making new friends (Matt, Ken and Gillian, and Chris are some great people with whom I look forward to further developing some friendships), and spending quality time with some long-time dear friends Dan and Joe. Randall from the former Next 6 Exits rode out there with us and locked us into a nice solid pocket of groove on the bass guitar. It was a true joy to spend some time in worship with the man who taught me what it means to be a worshipping musician.

Dan, by the way, put out a CD back in February called In The Space Between. It is an excellent collection of original worship songs that wonderfully reflect God’s majesty and love. I don’t think I have seen better lyrics on any worship collection ever. This album is sure to place high on this year’s top 10 list.

We came home from Midland on Sunday went to work for a couple days and On Wednesday night, we jumped back on the road and headed up toward Colorado. We spent some time with Grandma, Mom, Dad, Colin, Christy, and the finest group of aunts, uncles, and cousins a guy could have. I love going up there. It’s never been a secret to those who know me well how much I adore my extended family and it’s always a treat for me when I get to see them. Bret put together a fantastic afternoon of go cart racing for the entire family. This was the real thing…no putt putt action. A nice, long, windy track with some fast cars. There was a great BBQ on Saturday night and it’s always a good thing when you can spend Father’s Day with your dad. Colorado is a beautiful state too. It’s always hard coming back to Texas after being there. The natrual beauty there is unmatched. It’s a good thing I love living where I do or else I’d be doing my best to get us the heck out of here and up there.

After spending 37 hours behind the wheel of a car over the last two weeks, I thought I’d point out a few “observations”:

  • The speed limit in Texas sucks. What is this 70 MPH days/65 MPH nights crap? This state is ridiculously huge and once you get out of Dallas, it turns ugly. So, what do they do? Put a 70 MPH limit on these highways, and then put some anally retentive state troopers out there to make sure that’s exactly what you do. When I become governor, I will put a bill into action that puts the speed limit up to 80. Period. Just like it is in New Mexico. That’s what it needs to be here.
  • If you ever find yourself in the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, do yourself a favor and observe the posted speed limit. Enough said.
  • Thanks to the friendly state trooper in Pueblo for not giving me a ticket. I appreciate you noticing that I wasn’t really going that fast.
  • If you must drive across Texas, do it at night. The scenery is much nicer that way.
  • This town desperately needs a Carl’s Jr.
  • And a Del Taco.
  • Since we’re not getting an In-N-Out Burger anytime soon.

So, there’s that. I’ll be uploading some pictures from the last couple weeks before too long. I just need to get them organized and I’ll put ‘em up.

I’m glad to be home, though. Time to start packing.

On the road again…

Raquel and I are back on the road, doing the road trip thing…for the third time in four weeks. Awesome! Right now we find ourselves in Dumas, TX on our way to Littleton, CO. Going to see family. I’d write more but we need to keep on trucking so I’m out. More later.
