Funk

Posted on October 22nd, 2006 in Church, Music, Ramblings | No Comments »

I have decided, as of late, that Sunday nights are far and away my least favorite time of the week. I’m sure I don’t need to go into why this is. I just don’t like Sunday nights.

The last few days have had me in a bit of a funk. I’m not sure what that’s all about. I feel like I’m just on sanity’s side of an anxiety attack at points but I have no idea what I’m anxious about. At other times I feel just weird and introspective.

There have been some good moments of clarity though. Any time spent with Raquel is just precious to me. Last night we headed out to a new Starbuck’s just down the street from the house. No agenda…just to be out with each other alone. It was nice. We relaxed for a few minutes, visited with the folks around us, and had a nice time for a short time. This morning’s worship service was awesome as well. Paul’s vocal chords were pretty raw so I had the opportunity to lend a hand vocally, which is sort of a bit of a homecoming for me. It’s been a while since I’ve lead in the vocal capacity, but it was a treat to have that opportunity. I had a good set of tunes to sing with and an excellent team of capable musicians to back me up.

The Broncos won again today. Nice.

Had Men’s Bible study tonight. I didn’t have much to offer but it was a quality time.

Now, back at home. Sitting in the comfort of our living room, watching the Sports Extra and preparing for another work week. Kinda back in the funk, but not enough to be too concerned about it. Raquel’s falling asleep on the other couch looking as cute as ever and waiting for me to finish up. I think I’m going to do that now…

Raquel and I had the rare opportunity to hang out with Dan Radmacher last night. He was in town this week leading worship at a conference in Irving. What a golden time. When I evaluate those folks who have had the largest impact on my life in both spiritual and practical ways, Dan’s name would be very close to the top of my list. It is a joy and an honor to me that we still have the close friendship we do and I shall cherish for years to come.

Anyhow…we had a bite to eat, had a trip to the Guitar Center, and headed up to Frisco to hang with Paul Harris for a bit. It was great watching and listening to these two guys whom I respect greatly talking about worship. Dan played a huge role in influencing my approach to worship and the way I am now able to use that with Paul is pretty neat to me. I loved being able to bridge that connection last night.

While I’m thinking about it…later this week intend on starting a small blog series that will profile some of my ideas on worship. I’ve been thinking a lot a lot lately about the topic of “worship” and what exactly that entails. But this week, I listened to an mp3 of a sermon that Dan gave at his church back in Pasadena in August that was pretty profound to me. I’ve been tossing around the thought of writing about this for some time now, but what I heard earlier this week has me foaming at the virtual mouth to spill some thoughts out onto this blog thing. So, those of you show still read this…well, sit tight. I’ll try to make it interesting.

Song of the Week (video edition)

Posted on October 14th, 2006 in Music, Song Of The Week, Video | No Comments »

Well, I’m already a little behind on the Song of the Week series I started a couple weeks ago. I guess this is okay though…I don’t think anyone has missed it judging by the lack of traffic here lately. That’s cool.

So, anyhow…I’ve really been enjoying John Mayer’s latest offering for the past month or so. I had lost interest in him for a while but last year he put a trio together and did an amazing live album called Try! that dramatically re-piqued my interest in him. He has returned to letting his music do the job and there’s no mistaking how good a musician he is. So, when I heard that he was keeping the JM3 together for a new studio album, I thought I’d pay attention to it to see if he could win me back. When I heard the first single off the album–Waiting On The World To Change–back in June, I started to get skeptical thinking that this might not be as good as originally anticipated. Turns out I was dead wrong. I’ve already started thinking about where it will place in my top 10 for the end of the year.

I’m rambling.

There are so many quality cuts off this album but one of them has stuck out to me over the past couple weeks and I knew it would be the Song of the Week on the blog. Tonight I was flipping around on YouTube and sumbled on this quality live representation of Hendrix’s Bold As Love. This performance was at the telethon fundraiser shindig early last year for the victims of the tsunamis that struck the South Pacific. Mayer’s rendition of this song has a beauty to it that gives it a new life. And the solo on this performance is just smokin’! Anyhow…enjoy the tune.

Olympic Park

Posted on October 2nd, 2006 in Ramblings | No Comments »

I went with Mom and Dad yesterday to Olympic Park in Park City, Utah where the ski jumping, bobsled, luge, and skeleton events were held in the 2002 Winter Olympics. The facility is now used for training Olympic teams from around the world. Yesterday the US Arials team was practicing and we watched that for a while. Dad and I also rode the zipline they have. It was a good time. Check out the video clips.
