It has occurred to me recently that I haven’t posted much of anything of substance here since the 7 verses post. This post doesn’t serve any purpose other than calling attention to this fact and to perpetuate the trend. And maybe bump my Feedburner stats a couple notches by posting something new.
Now, these I could really go for. What an awesome concept! A bit pricey though. One thing is for sure, though…I would certainly start playing at home a lot more than I do now.
I thought I would take a brief moment to write about the things about this time of year that I like as well as the things I don’t care for so much.
Things I Like
NFL Football Season – This, in my opinion is the most entertaining of professional sports. I love football. And, man, have there been some great games this season so far. Did anyone watch that Indy/Tennesee game on Sunday? And my Denver Broncos have started 2-0, at the top of their division. I wonder how long it will stay that way. Cutler has shown us some nice things and with San Diego and Kansas City off to rough starts, and Oakland losing this week (to Denver), things are looking up in the AFC West if you’re a Denver fan.
That’s it. I think that’s the only thing I like about fall arriving.
Things I Don’t Like
Allergies – I apologize in advance to anyone who may be offended by my colorful depiction here, but all I have to say is this: fall allergies can bite my ass. I hate this crap. I’ve been “suffering” now for two weeks straight and the last two days, I’ve been up at 4:00 in the morning because I’ve been so stuffy I can’t breathe. I’ve taken two 24-hour Claritin D’s since 11:00 last night (the second of which was at about 5:00 this morning) and I’m still miserable. Geez!
Shorter Days – It’s not so much the getting dark early thing as it is the waking up in the dark. More than just about anything, this totally saps any energy I might have otherwise had in the morning. The morning and I aren’t friends. The least the sun could do is come up just a little bit earlier so I could have a little daylight while I get ready for work. And for those of us in North Texas part of the world, where the sun doesn’t come above the horizon until after 7:00, it’s going to get worse before it gets better…especially since daylight savings doesn’t end now until the middle of November.
My friend and former mentor, Dr. Ernie, recently posted a very intriguing entry and I’ve been thinking on it since I read it: Seven Verses Worth Dying For.
Here’s a snippet of what he wrote:
…what is the minimal set of essential truths central to my understanding of who God is; things so foundational to my thinking that I literally can’t imagine life without them. Or, more bluntly, what are the issues I (in my presumption) think we ought to be spending our time studying.
His original post on the topic left it kind of open participation-wise, but I’m going to turn this into a meme and tag a few folks at the end, who in turn, must tag a few folks, ad nauseum.
The catch: you can only pick seven, so if you add one you have to drop another.
Here’s my list…
Galatians 5:1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
Romans 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
John 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”
Romans 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
Psalm 150:6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD!
1 Peter 3:15 …but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
For those not familiar with the concept of being “tagged,” that means you gotta post your list on your own blog then tag five more folks. Oh, and when you’ve posted your list, leave a comment here…I’d like to read it.
Man…you know when things are just right? You’re in a right place with yourself, with your family, with God…
It’s been two weeks now since the return from Nicaragua. I have found myself pondering deeply on the purpose of what I do and trying to be intentional about injecting more focused purpose into everything I do or touch. This is a bit of a challenge in a culture such as that of North Texas, specifically Frisco. We are so far removed from the poverty that exists in places like Susuli, but the need in people’s lives for the hope that lies within a relationship with God through Jesus Christ is just as important here as it is there.
It’s interesting though, how I’ve approached things since my return. You pay attention to what you view on TV, what you read on the Internet, the conversations you have with people. That last part is particularly interesting in light of having started a new job two days after my return. But how does what I do on computers for the PD and FD in Frisco have an eternal impact on the lives of the people in this town? What is the deeper purpose in this expertise I have and how can I apply it to what I do on a daily basis and the people I work with and for?
There probably isn’t an answer to that question, but I have the desire to attempt finding it.
My sister is in town this weekend. It’s cool to have her here. I really enjoy spending time with her and it’s neat we get to have her in our home. Christy is pregnant with their first child and we found out yesterday that she and Owen are having a girl. She came to church this morning and got to meet some of our best friends. It was a long service though…Tim had a ton of content and it was a phenomenal service. Man, the movement of the Spirit continues and it gives me so much pleasure to be a witness to that. Lives are being changed.
Paul let me sing lead vocal this morning on a new tune we’ve done twice now called Endlessly by the Desperation Band. Wow…it is such a great tune and it was an honor to be able to lead the congregation in it! It’s so great to be able to worship with these people, in all aspects of life, but the activity of worship through music…sometimes you get in a moment and it just locks in so tightly. I caught a quick glimpse of Drew and Paul who were in the front row this morning when that tune was over and I knew it had been nailed, just from the way they were looking back.
Raquel’s brother, Joe, and Heather came over this afternoon and joined us for a late lunch at Mexigo, a great new Mexican spot in Little Elm. Tonight the Lozadas, Drew, Alexis came over and we threw all kinds of different meat on the BBQ and had a good time. The guys had to take off for MasterLife but the others stuck around and we had some great conversation. I love the Lozadas…I am so glad to have the opportunity to know them and share life with them and what I wrote about Alexis a couple days ago on my Nicaragua recap still stands.
Life is good. Favor rests upon me, keeps me in His grip. Great family, dear friends, good life. Awesome.
