Life In 2008

Posted on March 24th, 2008 in Learning to Fly, Ramblings, Tech Stuff | No Comments »

Here’s a very cool article written in 1968 about what life in America will be like in 2008.

I don’t have any flying cars yet, but I anxiously await the day. The cool part is, the article pretty much nailed modern technology.

I realize my tastes in music don’t lineup with what most of Americans enjoy, but at least I can recognize talent or lack thereof. That said, I am losing faith in a country full of music fans that can put Carly in the bottom three and not send Kristy Lee Cook home. Again. How she continues to stay on this show amazes me.

Where Are They Now?

Posted on March 19th, 2008 in Ramblings | No Comments »

From time to time, I get to thinking about some good times with some old friends of mine from back in Cali. It occurs to me during those times of reminiscing that I used to know some very cool folks with whom I now have zero contact. I’ve been fortunate to reconnect with some folks across the years thanks to the wonders of Facebook and MySpace, but I haven’t been so lucky with a few.

I’d love to get back in touch with a couple of these guys, and if anyone knows how that might happen, I’d appreciate a heads up:

Ian Anglin
David Aguirre

Does anyone know where those dudes are now?

American Idol Talk: Top 11

Posted on March 19th, 2008 in American Idol, Music, Pop Culture, Television | 1 Comment »

Wow. Just…wow.

Last night’s American Idol was a gigantic crapfest. I had some hope for it after what was a pretty entertaining show last week. This week…not so much.

There were some remotely decent performances; David Cook, Syesha, and Carly were arguably the three best (which isn’t saying much). As for the bottom three, we’re probably looking at Kristy Lee Cook who just sucks, Ramiele who seems out of place, and Brooke with that ridiculous take on Here Comes The Sun. I’d also not be surprised to see Amanda and Jason in that group as well.

My guess is that Kristy Lee Cook is going home tonight.

American Idol Talk: Top 12

Posted on March 14th, 2008 in American Idol, Music, Pop Culture, Television | 1 Comment »

I’m starting a new blog series for this year. I’ve talked about American Idol in the past but I’m going to make this a regular feature. My own personal commentary on American Idol.

I’m going to start off by saying that in the years that I’ve followed this show (I sort of paid attention to season one, completely missed the garbage-fests that were seasons two and three, and came back around during season four), the top 12 we currently have is the best top 12 since this show’s inception.

There were some jokers in the top 24 and I thought Josiah Leming should have made it into the top 24, but I think the remainder this season has the potential to be really, really good.

So, here’s my take on the top 12:

David Archuleta
: Enjoyable, charming, will easily make the top 5…not particularly impressed with what he brings to the table performance-wise

Jason Castro: Among my favorite of the guys. This guy deserves huge props by sheer virtue of the Buckley/Cohen mashup of Hallelujah, one of the greatest songs ever written. I’d love to see him in the top 3 but he’ll have to step it up for that to happen.

Chikezie: Love this dude! His performance this week was off tha hook…arguably the best! Top 3, easily.

David Cook: He’s a rocker. He fits the bill. He’ll make the top 3. His rendition of Elanor Rigby was fantastic this week.

Kristy Lee Cook: She’s nice to look at. She should be shot for that rendition of Eight Days A Week.

Michael Johns: He doesn’t seem to fit in with the others…can’t quite place it. I enjoy him, but I think the jury is still out on whether I really like what he brings to the table. He sure doesn’t suck, and sometimes that’s quite an endorsement coming from me. Top 5 material.

Ramiele Malubay: Overrated.

Syesha Mercado: I enjoy her but her Whitney Houston shtick is going to get old, I think. Possible top 5 material.

Amanda Overmyer: I guess she’s the VoteForTheWorst.com contestant of the year. I don’t think she’ll make the top 5 based solely on the fact that she’s not very versatile, but I dig what she brings to the table. Definitely not the worst though.

Carly Smithson: She’s currently my favorite to win this thing. I love this chick. I will be purchasing her studio version of Come Together from iTMS this week.

Brooke White: She’s cute. Definitely top 5, possibly top 3. I loved her performance this week.

David Hernandez: Good riddance.

So, there you go. Be sure to check back next week for another riveting installment of my AI commentary.

Weight Watchers: Update

Posted on March 12th, 2008 in Ramblings | No Comments »

I am becoming less of a fatty day by day. Today was the end of week 5. I am down a total of 13 pounds, with nearly 5 of them being in the last week or so. Pretty cool.

Speechless…

Posted on March 10th, 2008 in Ramblings | No Comments »

…yet still I choose to write. I write for the mere purpose of recording these thoughts somewhere.

I don’t know how to articulate the magnitude of what’s going on around me. Things that are bigger, holier, far deeper than I can understand how to grasp. I am humbled and yet blown away that I get to participate in such things. At this time, at this place, with these people.

I am profoundly struck by how small I am, but still…it seems like this is happening for my benefit.

This is so, so, so good!
